Serenity warns InP laser shortage for AI data centers could be worse than memory chips, spotlighting a critical bottleneck in optical communication infrastructure.

An influential crypto analyst highlights a warning from Lumentum's CEO that indium phosphide (InP) lasers, vital for AI data centers, face a severe supply shortage that may exceed memory chip constraints, potentially limiting AI infrastructure expansion and affecting related companies.

What happened

Analyst Serenity, known in crypto and stock circles by his “White-Haired Stock God” nickname, has warned that indium phosphide (InP) lasers for AI data centers could face a supply gap even worse than the memory chip shortage. The warning follows comments from Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston, who reportedly said that despite the company’s five InP wafer fabs, product shipments could still fall more than 30% short of customer demand.

Why it matters for the market

That would put optical communication components at the center of the AI infrastructure bottleneck. Serenity notes that supply pressure is currently most visible in electro-absorption modulated lasers (EML), but the InP laser shortage risk could spread across the broader optical communication supply chain.

Serenity says he remains structurally bullish on what he calls “bottleneck investment” opportunities in the optical communication laser supply chain. He is focusing on names such as Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI), Sivers Semiconductors (SIVE), Lumentum (LITE) and Coherent (COHR), as AI data center capital expenditure continues to climb.

What traders should watch

The broader takeaway is that optical modules and laser components, which were previously underappreciated by the market, are now being repriced. The InP laser bottleneck may become one of the key limiting factors in AI compute expansion, and related supply chain headlines could keep driving volatility and intraday speculation in these names.
