What happened
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has dismissed the idea that the rise of artificial intelligence will come at the expense of cryptocurrency, arguing instead that the two technologies are complementary. In a post on X, Armstrong described crypto as a general-purpose technology and infrastructure similar to electricity or the internet, which underpins rather than competes with emerging trends.
Why it matters for the market
According to Armstrong, AI agents will require their own dedicated financial infrastructure, as they cannot open bank accounts, wait days for wire transfers, or operate within a single country. They need real-time programmable money to hold funds and pay for services autonomously. This necessity, he believes, will make cryptocurrency even more essential as AI adoption accelerates.
Armstrong revealed that Coinbase is already exploring this intersection through projects like the x402 protocol, the Base network, and USDC stablecoin. He noted that these technologies currently support the majority of agent-based payments, and that AI agents will eventually engage in trading, serve as financial advisors, raise or borrow funds for new projects, and handle tasks such as tax planning, portfolio rebalancing, and bill payments.
What traders should watch
Terming this vision 'Agentic Finance' or 'AiFi', Armstrong stated that Coinbase is actively building in this space. His comments counter a zero-sum mindset that views AI and crypto as rivals, positioning them instead as converging forces in the evolution of digital finance.
