What happened
The United States and Israel are reportedly discussing the possibility of imposing a land blockade on Iran as part of efforts to intensify economic pressure on Tehran. The proposal is said to be one of several options under consideration by President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Why it matters for the market
According to the Daily Telegraph, such a plan would likely require Washington and Jerusalem to pressure Iran's neighboring and regional partners to tighten or completely close border crossings, restricting Iranian import and export flows. Iran shares borders with Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, meaning many countries would need to cooperate, despite several of them not being close allies of Washington or Israel.
Retired Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland, a former three-star general, acknowledged that a land blockade would be "almost impossible" to implement. However, he argued that depriving Iran of its ability to trade would economically isolate the country, calling that "the way to make them yield." He added that economic measures are the "most concise" approach but would need to include a military component.
What traders should watch
Potential targets of such a blockade could include major border crossings such as Incebolan and Sarakhs-Sarakhs, which connect Iran with Turkmenistan. While the feasibility remains highly doubtful, the discussion underscores the escalating economic and military pressure being considered by both governments.
