Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Thursday that an object that crashed into a field in eastern Poland early that morning was probably a Russian missile. The object created a 10-metre-wide crater near the village of Tarnawa Kolonia, about 100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, during a Russian attack on the city of Lviv.
Why it matters for the market
Tusk stated that all indications point to a Russian Kh-101 ballistic missile, but Polish authorities want to be 100% certain about the type and who launched it. Ukraine's acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha earlier claimed that a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile had crossed into Poland, violating NATO airspace.
Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said about 20 objects were detected near Polish airspace overnight, and pyrotechnical analysis is underway to identify the object that fell near Tarnawa Kolonia. Poland's military detected the object at 03:40 local time and scrambled an F-16 fighter jet to intercept it before it disappeared from radar minutes later.
What traders should watch
Tusk reported no casualties but described the incident as serious. The Polish leader had met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Lublin the previous evening. Separately, Russian strikes on Ukraine killed eight people, including three children, according to Ukrainian officials.
