What happened
Apple has overtaken Nvidia to become the world's most valuable company, ending the chipmaker's more than two-year reign at the top. The iPhone maker reached a market capitalization of $4.99 trillion as of midday Tuesday, briefly crossing the $5 trillion mark around noon. Nvidia, by contrast, held a valuation of about $4.78 trillion.
Why it matters for the market
Apple's stock has climbed 25% since the start of the year, reflecting renewed investor confidence. The company, which was the first to reach a $3 trillion valuation, has historically been the world's most valuable for stretches of the 2010s and early 2020s. However, it has struggled to find its footing in the AI race in recent years.
Nvidia initially became the most valuable company in June 2024, bumping Microsoft from the top spot. Its rapid rise was closely tied to the AI boom, as its advanced chips are critical for AI development. Nvidia was also the first company to hit a $4 trillion valuation last July and later crossed $5 trillion. But after a blockbuster 2025, the chipmaker has seen more lackluster gains in 2026, with its stock up only 4.6% so far this year.
What traders should watch
The shift in market leadership comes amid concerns about the costs of AI and the threat of Chinese rivals, which weighed on Nvidia and other chipmakers on Monday. Apple's resurgence highlights changing investor sentiment within the tech sector.
