Argentina's President Javier Milei sparked a diplomatic rift with Brazil on Sunday after calling Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva a 'thief' and a 'convict' during a political rally in São Paulo. The comments came as Milei attended the campaign launch of right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, who is running in Brazil's October election. Without naming Lula directly, Milei referred to him derogatorily while praising Bolsonaro as the only one who could 'stop Lula.' The Brazilian government responded by recalling its ambassador to Argentina, Julio Bitelli, according to AFP. Brazil's diplomats stated that Milei had insulted the country's government, its people, and its democracy. Later on Sunday, Lula said he would continue to lead 'without anyone's interference' and that Brazil does not accept outsiders meddling in its affairs. Milei also insulted Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who convicted former President Jair Bolsonaro for plotting a coup. Milei called Moraes 'bald trash' and had been denied permission to visit Bolsonaro under house arrest. The incident threatens to strain relations between the two largest South American economies, which are key trading partners.
