UN Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned the Houthi rebels for resuming attacks on commercial ships transiting the Red Sea, warning that such actions threaten maritime security and risk escalating regional tensions. In a statement released on July 24 by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres expressed deep concern over the renewed hostilities, which he said could further destabilize the region and potentially drag Yemen deeper into conflict. The statement highlighted that the deteriorating situation in Yemen undermines peace prospects and poses severe economic, humanitarian, and environmental consequences locally and beyond. Guterres called for immediate de-escalation, urging the Houthis to cease all attacks and comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2722 and related resolutions protecting commercial vessels and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. He stressed that international navigation rights and freedom of passage through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and surrounding waters must be fully restored.
