Argentina is moving to deregulate its capital markets, proposing a bill that would allow mutual investment funds (FCI) to invest in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, and permit virtual assets to be used as collateral. The draft deregulation bill, authored by Economy Minister Federico Sturzenegger, is awaiting President Javier Milei's signature before being sent to Congress. The proposal explicitly permits FCIs to allocate assets to virtual assets and establishes funds for qualified investors. Under the draft, Argentina's National Securities Commission will oversee FCIs only for legality and technical solvency, while the central bank will exclusively regulate infrastructure for registering or transferring crypto and tokenized assets. The bill also allows securities such as stocks and convertible bonds to be issued, stored, and traded via crypto networks. If enacted, the measure could significantly expand institutional crypto exposure in Argentina, potentially boosting market liquidity and risk appetite. Traders may watch for increased volatility as the bill progresses through the legislative process.
